To test the doneness of cakes, bars, and quick breads, a toothpick is employed. Baked goods are generally done when the center of the item is free of any debris when a toothpick is inserted.

  • Substitution: When checking the doneness of a baked good, an alternative to using a toothpick is a metal cake tester.
  • Tip: A clean toothpick should be used every time you check the doneness of your dish. To avoid cake particles sticking to the toothpick, remove the toothpick from the cake after it is done baking.
